Intersectionality

Coined by Professor Kimberle Crenshaw, Intersectionality is understanding how aspects of one's social and political identities (gender identity, race, class, sexuality, ability, etc.) might combine to create unique modes of discrimination.

Food for thought:

Reflect the different forms of intersectionality that may impact our Berkeley community.

Microagression:
Any small-scale verbal or physical interaction between those of different races, cultures, or genders that has no malicious intent, but that can be interpreted as an aggression.
Oppression:
The state of being subject to unjust treatment or control.
Privilege:
A special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group.

How does intersectionality impact a student's role in a community?

I sometimes feel that my classmates don't acknowledge their privileges, especially when incentive comments are made around me."
